without instrumental accompaniment

*flist rubs its eyes* Yes, it's me, posting to my journal.

In a desperate effort to locate some holiday spirit, I dove into Youtube today. I'm really excited about the season premiere of The Sing Off Monday night, so I started there.

I love a cappella music, so The Sing Off felt like it was made for me. Ben Folds is magic,, Shawn Stockman (Boyz 2 Men) certainly has the credentials, and Nichole Sherzinger...is an excellent dancer with great hair. And the groups are incredible, so there will be wine, popcorn and a reverent silence in my house on Monday and Wednesday nights for awhile. (Sorry Johnny Weir, it breaks my heart to time-shift you, but I must. Will watch pithy comments and fab outfits late night on Tivo.)

Apparently they've leaked the opening number for this season's Sing-Off. Oh, and West Wingers? THE WHIFFENPOOFS are competing this year!

So I was poking around YT for more fun stuff. THIS was my favorite number from Glee, ever (except Bust Your Windows). This is what I thought I'd be getting from Glee from the start, and they finally delivered on my little dream.

That performance is incredible, but this next one is incredible and live! Sorry, Glee, you come from a studio, so we're taking points off for degree of difficulty. Anyway, listen to this -- it's got all kinds of crazy chord progressions and a key changes and other stuff I can hear but can't explain cause I'm not a musician.

(Yes I know it's NSYNC, and it's fucking amazing so shut up and WATCH IT.)

These guys are the gold standard:

And here's a fun one from Chanticleer:

Ok, so who has other great a cappella to share? Hit me in the comments.

Manhattan Transfer for me all the way! Er, but that's because I know very little about a cappella in general.

My point is, hi you! <3

Hah, yes! *off to youtube for Manhattan Transfer*

Hi back! I'm out here...I read your fabulous posts but rarely comment -- will resolve to do better. :D

Well, you say "Ben Folds" and "a capella" and, of course, I go here:

Impromptu a capella is even better, IMO.

God I love him. Thanks for posting this, I hadn't seen it!
Dec. 6th, 2010 04:31 pm (UTC)
Seems like a sweet guy, doesn't he?

I hadn't seen it!
I'm glad I brought it over, then!

And he's a fascinating judge, on The Sing Off. He's my favorite kind -- he's constructive, but he clearly brings SO much musical knowledge to his critiques. Listening to him, you really learn something about music. He describes what he's hearing when he judges, and it's a lot more than I'm hearing, so it's really fascinating.

That's my favorite kind of commentator, in any field: The one who wants to share their knowledge.
Dec. 6th, 2010 01:08 am (UTC)
... which led me to this. "Army," only 100 percent a capella.

Points off, though, for censoring the second line. ;-)

Isn't it fun to follow your nose through youtube? This is great!

whoops! I wanted Pam singing, not shocked and dismayed.

Well, frak me briefly - it's Mary! Hope you're well, and happy holidays to you and the kiddos if I don't 'see' you again before Christmas. :-)
Dec. 6th, 2010 03:58 pm (UTC)
Hi, honey! Thank you! Hope your holidays are peaceful and trouble-free. ;-)
Dec. 6th, 2010 03:27 am (UTC)
you're looking for a capella? Check out anything by Straight No Chaser. They've got a lot on youtube. In light of the Christmas season, this is one of my favorites:

Also? The Glee Teenage Dream is one of my favorites.... :) I downloaded it from iTunes just so I could listen to it whenever I wanted. :)
Dec. 6th, 2010 03:44 am (UTC)
LOVE SNC and that is a fantastic song. Their Christmas album gets heavy rotation on iPod.
Dec. 6th, 2010 04:18 am (UTC)
It's all Mary's fault....I've been watching youtube videos of these guys now for like an hour. I'm watching someone's videos of their Indy show that my mom and I almost went to. I'm so mad we decided not to go (we were leaving to go out of town at 5:30 the next morning....)

I've spent the last 45 minutes watching various videos because of Mary. She's evil like that.

I do love them! That is a great one.

I found something by them that's fun (and relevant to my interests) and will post downthread.
Dec. 6th, 2010 03:48 am (UTC)
Kaprin mentioned them already but I love Straight No Chaser. I happen to really like their version of one of my favorite Christmas songs.

Dec. 6th, 2010 04:02 pm (UTC)
I love them too. I actually hoped you guys who know them better would come and post some of their stuff. Thanks! This is fantastic.

See downthread for something funny by them...

So I love this version of Blackbird by the University of California Men's Octet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkaToqoVj7k&feature=related

I also love these guys. Because they are funny and talented.

Oh, the Bad Romance is great too. I've seen that one before. :) But now I REALLY need to go to bed. Good night! And hope you had a Happy Birthday!! :)

I completely forgot it was on tonight. And dumb DVR is already recording things. I really really hope YouTube finds it. And now I need to program the DVR to grab this show.
Dec. 7th, 2010 02:33 am (UTC)
Ok, I made a WHOLE POST to remind people to watch it. My first post in a year. You have to admit it's pretty funny. No? Ok.

I can't tell you how many times I've done something exactly like that.

Good news: NBC clearly leaked the opening performance to Youtube, so I'm thinking they will post them. Last year, they kept pulling them down, but this year they seem to have a different strategy.

Or...it's NBC, so Hulu has to have it.

And you have to find the Whiffenpoofs singing Grace Kelly! Amazing.

I was so focused on getting to the post office today that I completely forgot other things on the list.

I'm pathetic.

I'll go looking tomorrow. I can do it while I'm pretending to upload hours of video for work. Which I really don't want to do.

The King's Singers, baby.

Honey Pie

Creole Love Call

Little Drummer Boy
(This song almost always makes me cry.)

Dec. 6th, 2010 04:08 pm (UTC)
Damn, girl!

I knew I was forgetting somebody...thank you! They are so awesome.
Dec. 6th, 2010 04:13 pm (UTC)
OMG Honey Pie is so great! I'd never seen that before.
Dec. 6th, 2010 05:31 pm (UTC)
I LOVE their Little Drummer Boy!

Now I must flee this thread before I get sucked into another hour of YouTube.
Dec. 6th, 2010 04:04 pm (UTC)
For those who mentioned Straight No Chaser...this is not their best performance (nor is it a great vid) but it's SO much fun.

Dec. 6th, 2010 04:52 pm (UTC)
They are so cute. You can just tell that seeing them in concert would be a blast.
Dec. 7th, 2010 03:28 am (UTC)
I have a friend who was a Whiffenpoof while in college. Apparently, he was too nervous on their behalf to watch them himself tonight...and had to ask for updates as to their performance via Facebook. :)
Dec. 7th, 2010 04:01 am (UTC)
They were amazing!!! They sang Grace Kelly, the mere fact of which nearly killed me on the spot.

This is as much as is up right now. You could link him if he isn't hooked up already. :)

The Beelzebubs
The Bubs were my faves from last season. (Though Nota was better and deserved to win.) These guys were amazing amounts of fun. WATCH!
